There's an old Trini saying that goes

"Cobo doh eat sponge cake,"

which essentially means that the bad will avoid the good.

In that spirit, we're excited to announce the Cobo and Sponge Cake awards as a means to playfully highlight great or bad experiences with businesses.   For products or services that fall below expectations, annoy, disappoint or are just plain terrible  we have the Cobo award.  For products and services above expectations, delight and surprise we have the  Sponge Cake Award.

Why Cobo Award?

a1sx2_Cobothumbnail_cobo-award.jpgFor newcomers and visitors to Trinidad, our local vulture is affectionately called the "cobo"(wrong spelling ... I know), and is associated with dead and decaying animals - basically all things rotting and smelling that the average person will want to run away from.

For the average Trini and Tobagonian, giving a Cobo award is immediately clear and funny.  On GoodTalk it is meant to poke some 'picong' (teasing/fun) at a business or institution for something that they could or should clearly do better.  And boy do we have a lot of things we could do better at.

Why Sponge Cake Award?

a1sx2_Spongecakethumnail_Spongecake-slice.jpg Trinidad sponge cake - delicious, rich and wonderful, makes you want to come back for more and maybe even share with your friends.  If you have had a great experience with a company or restaurant or service - share the experience, give kudos where it is due.  We chose it as a light-hearted counter to the Cobo Award and because of the saying above.

If you have had an experience with a local company that made an extra effort to make you as a customer happy, (in addition to leaving them a review) nominate them for a nice Sponge Cake award and encourage them to keep up the good work.

We need to praise the good as much as highlight the behaviours that we should not tolerate.

Unlike Cobo Awards we will accept Sponge Cake Nominations for (named) people e.g. a particular waiter or waitress or licensing officer who you think is doing a good job.

It's all Fun

Now, let's be clear.  This is meant to use 'picong' to draw attention to sub-standard performance, products and situations that can be fixed and it is our hope that our government and business people will be adult and just fix whatever it is they got the Cobo award for.

No malicious intent, no personal attacks, in fact we'll do our best to stay away from venom of any kind.

This is all about shining a light on things that could be improved, and things that are good with the hope that the Cobo Award, in particular, encourages positive change.  A little shame can work wonders at times.

Redemption Awards

Cobo awards are not meant to be a life sentence but to encourage change for the better.  Any business or institution getting a Cobo Award can get a Redemption Award when they fix or improve the situation they got the Cobo Award for.  (if you have a clever name suggestion for this let me know).

How to Nominate something for an Award

You can nominate something for a Cobo, Sponge Cake award by entering it in the Discussion Area of the website.  If a Cobo Award recipient deserves redemption, you can also nominate them in the Discussions area.
